Eat well - feel stronger
So many people this time of year come to me with the hope of shedding weight to prepare for their ‘beach body’, that I thought I’d dedicate a few issues of your Poets Pages to the topic of weight-loss.
So let’s start with a couple of facts:
Don’t diet. It’s quite simple and you know it: DIETS DON’T WORK. Not only do they not work, but they’ll also ruin your health by throwing your blood sugar out of balance and making your organs desperately try to keep you healthy on very few calories and low levels of essential nutrients.
Avoid the diet trap by eating little and often. Don’t believe the bad publicity given to snacking and kiss goodbye to the sugar cravings and yo-yo energy levels by eating small but nutrient-packed meals throughout the day. Keep your sugar cravings (and fear of starvation) at bay by eating fist-sized meals 4 to 5 times a day rather than three large meals. Include some protein, lots of vegetables, complex carbohydrates and essential good fats in each little meal and eat every three hours or so. Beware: this requires a little organisation and planning, another must for healthy bodies and minds!
