A New Kind of Resolutions
Who ever thought the new year was the best time to give up smoking, sugar, or taking up daily exercise? Don’t you think that the dark, cold winter months are more appropriate for snuggling up on the sofa, resting frazzled nerves (following the holiday season), and sleeping more? After all, most animals hybernate in winter, don’t they?
This is why I feel we all need a different mindset when entering a new year – not one filled with ‘shoulds’ and guilt, but one that helps us feel good about ourselves.
Start your 2024 here
Here are some great ways to start the year on a positive note:
- Be grateful: List everything from the past year that you’re grateful for. The small and big things.
- Acknowledge others: Start a habit of regularly saying to people around you what you appreciate about them. Start now to acknowledge others, perhaps a phone call you’ve been procrastinating about, sending a ‘thank you’ card to your butcher, or a kind word to your nearest and dearest? Spread positivity and it will definitely come back to you (even if that’s not the aim of this ‘exercise’)
- Thank your body. Reverse the self-criticism and get into the habit of thanking every organ, cell, inch of your body for doing such a great job of keeping you alive day and night.
- Praise list: List all the traits of yourself that you love and are proud of. Read it daily with love in your heart.
- Pamper yourself more. Be kinder to yourself and take one loving, pampering action every day. Will yours be cooking yourself a healthy meal, taking a long walk or having a massage?
In the words of the great Maya Angelou: “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”
Let’s make 2024 a year of more kindness towards ourselves and everyone around us.
