Tryptophan-Rich Foods For Better Sleep, Mood, Energy

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that plays a crucial role in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Known as the “feel-good” hormone, serotonin promotes feelings of well-being and happiness. Without sufficient tryptophan in your diet, your body may struggle to produce enough serotonin, which can lead to issues like anxiety, poor sleep, and low mood. Find out more about serotonin here.

Best Sources of Tryptophan

Since the body cannot produce tryptophan on its own, it is vital to obtain it through food sources. A diet rich in tryptophan can help support serotonin production, improving mental health, sleep quality, and stress management. There are many excellent sources of tryptophan you can incorporate into your daily meals.

Proteins:

Turkey is one of the richest sources of tryptophan and is often associated with its calming, sleep-inducing effects. Including turkey in your meals, particularly at night, is an easy way to boost serotonin levels and improve your mood. Another excellent source is chicken, which provides high-quality protein essential for serotonin production, making it a key part of a balanced diet.

Eggs, particularly the yolks, are also packed with tryptophan, along with a host of other vitamins and nutrients. They are an easy and versatile way to increase your intake of this important amino acid.

Nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, pumpkin, and sunflower seeds, are excellent plant-based sources of tryptophan. They also provide healthy fats and other nutrients that support overall brain function and well-being.

Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna are not only rich in tryptophan but also provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to support brain health and emotional balance. Including fish in your diet can promote a positive mood and improve sleep.

Carbohydrates:

Oats are a fantastic source of complex carbohydrates and tryptophan, helping to increase serotonin production. If you eat breakfast, they provide sustained energy, making them a great breakfast option for boosting mood and focus.

Legumes, including lentils, chickpeas, and black beans, offer plant-based protein and a good amount of tryptophan. They are also high in fibre, supporting digestive health and maintaining stable blood sugar levels, which contributes to better mood stability.

Pineapple is an unexpected but valuable source of tryptophan. This tropical fruit is also rich in antioxidants and bromelain, an enzyme that supports digestion and reduces inflammation.

No-Carb Diets Won’t Help

Always add a small portion of complex carbohydrates with your protein meal to help with the absorption of Tryptophan and protein.  This has further been found to help tryptophan reach the brain, hence boosting its impact on mood, relaxation and feelings of wellbeing.

Some examples include: sweet potatoes, legumes, wholegrain (preferably gluten-free: oats, millet, quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat etc), and some fruit.

To Conclude

The abundance of tryptophan in protein further highlights the importance of incorporating sufficient amounts of protein in your diet.  Read more about protein and its importance in mental and physical health here.  The article will also give you an indication of what amounts of protein you may require.

Additionally, ensuring you consume an adequate amount of protein and some complex carbohydrates (which also provides good levels of fibre) will also help your digestion to become more efficient. This is particularly important as serotonin is mostly produced and synthesised in the gut!
