Is the idea of the impending winter – with the inevitable sniffles and colds – filling you with dread?
Any health practitioner worth his/her salt will tell you to get off the sofa and eat healthily in preparation for the months to come. But for most, good nutrition and regular exercise won’t suffice – if stress is hampering all your efforts at being healthy.
Through my practice I witness every day the ravages of stress on those suffering from such ailments as IBS, Crohn’s, eczema, migraines, hormonal imbalances, depression etc. Although stress isn’t the only reason for developing these conditions, research suggests that it can lead to the depletion of immune-boosting healthy bacteria in the gut, as well as essential micronutrients.
So what’s a quick and effective way to reduce stress and improve immunity?
Here’s a simple stress-relieving breathing exercise:
– Lie/sit down, close your eyes, relax your shoulders and place a hand on your lower abdomen.
– Inhale slowly through the nose and try and push your hand away, as if inflating a balloon inside your tummy.
– Exhale through your mouth and push your hand in – ‘deflating’ the balloon.
– Repeat 5 times, 5 times a day.
You might find yourself breathing this way naturally very soon and reaping the many benefits of relaxation!
