The Power of Meal Planning

The Power of Meal Planning:

Achieving Health Goals Through Thoughtful Preparation

Meal planning is more than just a weekly chore; it’s a powerful tool that can significantly impact your health and wellbeing – in addition to reducing your food bills. I see it over and over with my clients: Those who plan will invariably make great progress in whatever health goal they have set, those who don’t struggle more.

Research consistently shows that individuals who plan their meals are more likely to achieve their health goals, whether that’s weight loss, improved digestion, or increased energy levels.

Here’s why:

Firstly, meal planning encourages healthier eating habits by reducing your reliance on convenience foods, which are often high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and additives. A study published in the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity found that people who regularly plan their meals were more likely to consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods and less likely to be overweight or obese compared to those who didn’t plan their meals* .

In addition, mindful meal planning supports mindful eating, a practice that is closely linked to better digestion and gut health. According to research in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behaviour, individuals who plan their meals are more inclined to prepare home-cooked meals, which generally contain more fibre, fewer processed ingredients, and balanced portions – all factors that contribute to a healthier gut microbiome.

Lastly, having a structured meal plan can reduce stress around food choices and eating routines. This is particularly beneficial for those with specific health goals such as managing blood sugar levels or following an anti-inflammatory diet. A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine highlights that meal planning reduces the likelihood of impulsive eating and promotes consistency in following dietary guidelines, enhancing long-term adherence to health goals .

How you can do it:

There are many apps to choose from, some free and connected to recipes and shopping lists.  Some even offer the option to share your lists with other family members, so you can do this as a family health drive, that you can all take responsibility for.

Otherwise, a good piece of paper and pen will suffice! Make columns for each day of the week and include not just meals but snacks too. Check your diary and be realistic on when you’re likely to have time and energy to cook or not.  Include your busy or travelling to work days, and plan what to take with you, or what you can and will buy when out.

Freeze extra portions for those days you know you won’t have the time or energy to prepare much – nothing wrong with leftovers!

Make sure to always have some healthy dips, snacks and easy to prepare salad ingredients that you can put together quickly.  Steamed edamame beans take 3 min to prepare and are full of protein and good fibre for example!

Meal planning is a straightforward yet effective strategy to support your health journey. By taking the time to plan your meals and snacks, you can enjoy a varied, balanced diet that aligns with your personal health goals, fostering a healthier and happier lifestyle.  This will also be reflected in your finances, as you will be far less likely to impulse shop and go off track with unnecessary and unhealthy purchases.
