Why General Health Advice Fails Women 35+: Here’s What to Do Instead
Two years ago, I found myself sitting across from a doctor, reading a set of blood results that shocked us both. The diagnosis? Borderline Graves Disease.
I was floored. Not just because of the diagnosis, but because of what it represented.
I kept thinking:
“How could I, of all people, get this?”
I ate well. Didn’t smoke. Rarely drank. I exercised, meditated, watched my stress (most of the time), and generally led a “healthy” life. Or so I thought.
When ‘Healthy Habits’ Aren’t Enough
Like so many women I work with, I thought I was ticking all the boxes. I genuinely believed that my lifestyle was supporting me.
But when my doctor looked at my results, all she said was:
“Let’s wait and see what your results look like in 3 months.”
That was it. No action plan. No support. No deeper questions.
And I was left thinking, “Wait and see… what??”
Suddenly, this invisible threat had taken over my life. The symptoms, especially the anxiety and the fast heartbeat that would jolt me awake at night, made it impossible to ignore.
I felt overwhelmed. And completely unsupported by a medical system that, quite frankly, didn’t know what to do with me.
Why the System Fails Women in Midlife
Here’s the truth: the current health system isn’t built for women in their 30s, 40s and 50s who are navigating hormonal shifts, emotional stress, gut issues, and chronic symptoms that don’t fit into neat diagnostic boxes.
We’re often told:
-
“Everything looks fine.”
-
“It’s just stress.”
-
“It’s probably perimenopause (ie: it’s natural)
- “I can give you this medication to help with some of your symptoms – it might help for a while.”
-
“Come back in a few months.”
But we know something isn’t right. And many of us don’t want the ‘shot in the dark’ medications that will inevitably create other symptoms.
We know our bodies. We feel the disconnection, the fatigue, the bloating, the mood swings, the insomnia, and we’re often left to figure it out alone.
My Turning Point
I knew I couldn’t wait around. And I definitely wasn’t going to destroy my thyroid with radioactive medication without exploring other options.
So I went into action mode. And yes, I obsessed. But this time, I obsessed with intention.
I made a conscious decision:
Something in my life had created this… and I was going to find and undo whatever that was.
Despite all the “healthy” things I was doing, I knew there were hidden imbalances. And – this was hard to admit – some of those healthy habits were actually making things worse.
I took a deep breath and started doing what I now help my clients do every day:
I Looked at Everything
I scrutinised every corner of my life:
-
My exercise routine (was I overdoing it?)
-
My eating habits (was I under-eating without realising it?)
-
My work-life boundaries
-
My relationships
-
My energy, sleep, nervous system
-
My stress. The real stress, not the surface-level “I’m fine” stress
And I made some very tough decisions.
But those decisions?
They changed everything.
Within 4 months, I had reversed the diagnosis.
Even my endocrinologist ran two separate blood tests: she thought the first one must have been a mistake.
(It wasn’t.)
What I Learned, and What I Want You to Know
I learned that health is never about one thing.
It’s not just your food.
It’s not just your hormones.
It’s not just your mindset.
It’s all of it.
And if you don’t address the whole, you’ll always feel like something’s missing.
Why General Advice Doesn’t Work
That’s why general health advice, even the well-meaning kind, often fails women over 35.
It doesn’t:
-
Take your unique body into account
-
Factor in stress, trauma, or lived experience
-
Honour the hormonal shifts that change how you eat, sleep, move, and think
-
Offer sustainable, compassionate support
Most importantly, it doesn’t treat you as a whole person.
So What Does Work?
A holistic, personalised approach that sees the entire picture.
This is what I now offer to every woman I work with. Not a generic plan or one-size-fits-all fix, but deep, layered support rooted in:
-
Functional nutrition
-
Mindset mentoring
-
Nervous system awareness
-
Habit healing
-
Emotional resilience
-
Self-connection
Because you don’t need a stricter diet.
You need someone who can help you read the signals your body is sending and walk with you while you respond.
If You’re Feeling This Too…
Maybe you’re in the same boat I was.
You eat well (most of the time).
You try to manage your stress.
You meditate.
You read the books.
And still, you feel off.
Maybe it’s bloating. Mood swings. Weight gain that nothing stops. Exhaustion. Anxiety. Cravings. Foggy thinking.
Or maybe it’s just that quiet voice whispering, “I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
I see you.
And I want you to know:
You’re not broken. You’re not lazy. You’re not imagining it.
You just haven’t had the right support – yet.
Let’s Get You Back in Balance
Having been there myself, and having helped hundreds of women find their way back to energy, clarity and confidence, I know what’s possible.
You can feel good again.
Not just better, but whole.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
