Self-Love For Mothers

Why Self-Love is the Greatest Gift a Mother Can Give (to Herself) 🌸

Mother’s Day is a beautiful moment of celebration, but it can also be an invitation. A soft whisper that reminds us: you deserve the same love you so freely give.

As mothers, we’re taught to put everyone else first. Our needs, desires, even our identities can slowly fade into the background as we nurture, protect, and pour ourselves into others.

But here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup.

The Roots Run Deep

My journey to self-love didn’t begin with motherhood,  but I’ve come to see how closely they are intertwined.

Growing up with two older brothers who bullied me, and with parents who were emotionally absent, I learned early on to toughen up, to silence my feelings, and to believe that my worth was conditional. Conditional on being thinner. Quieter. Different.

This is not an unfamiliar story for many women. Somewhere along the way, we internalise the idea that love must be earned. That our natural self: the messy, tired, joyful, complicated, just isn’t good enough.

The Hidden Pattern

In my work and life, I see the same pattern over and over: brilliant, caring women (especially mothers) believing that their worth lies in their ability to serve, perform, or meet impossible standards,  often set by others. We forget our own voice. We abandon ourselves in the name of being “good.”

But self-love isn’t selfish. It’s foundational. And for mothers, it’s essential.

Because when we constantly put ourselves last, we send a silent message — to ourselves and our children — that we don’t matter as much. That our feelings, energy, and health are optional.

A Practice That Changed Everything

I didn’t wake up one day magically healed. I’m still on the path, but one practice has made a profound difference:

Metta Meditation: a gentle, Buddhist practice of loving-kindness.

It’s simple, yet transformative. You sit quietly, breathe deeply, and repeat phrases like:

May I be happy. May I be safe. May I be healthy. May I live with ease.

Then, you extend those wishes to others: one person at a time, or all at once.

It’s a way of speaking to your soul. Rewiring years of harsh inner dialogue. Restoring softness where hardness took root.

Sometimes, I whisper these phrases while driving, cooking, or lying in bed. They’ve become little mantras: threads of compassion weaving through my day.

This Mother’s Day (and Beyond…)

This week, I invite you, mother, woman, nurturer: to give yourself the gift of one small act of love, every day.

Take a walk. Breathe in silence. Journal. Say no. Take a nap. Cry. Dance. Meditate. Whisper Metta phrases to yourself.

Whatever fills your cup… do that.

Because the greatest gift you can give your children and loved ones isn’t a spotless home or a perfectly packed lunch:  it’s a mother who knows her worth. A mother who knows how to love herself deeply, gently, and without condition.

You are worthy of that love.

Every. Single. Day.
